TERROSO SERIES
The “Terroso” series explores the subtle beauty and grounded tranquility found in opulent, thickly applied paint. After a long period of vibrant experimentation with color in thin, veiled, ethereal layers, I felt drawn to the comforting richness of heavy, dense, luscious paint layers reminiscent of soil, bark, and stone, especially after my travels to Lake Powell, Jordan, and Egypt. In Barcelona I was struck at how every single surface is covered with tile, texture, and pattern – nothing is held back. Though Gaudi led the way, Gerard Richter and Anselm Kiefer continued the trend: more is more.
There is something primordial about the seduction of paint that feels like cool clay. It draws me back to childhood, making mud pies and building sandcastles. Paint that is the consistency of cake batter, spread onto the canvas like thick icing. Gestural applications of pigment blend and bleed into each other, creating softly mottled surfaces that emulate the weathered patinas of sun-baked desert rock or mineralized wood grain. Layers of opaque and transparent passages play together in a new amalgamation.
My process echoes the unhurried evolution of landscapes shaped by wind, water, and time's relentless touch. With “Terroso”, I’m exploring the tactile, the carefree, and the uninhibited -- those things that connect us to the natural world in an elemental way.
