YOU’RE NOT LATE FOR ANYTHING

YOU’RE NOT LATE FOR ANYTHING  [t-h-i-n-k]

When I grew up, there were a lot of “should’s”:

  • I should go to college and get a “real job”, as opposed to a fake job (such as an artist)

  • I should get a job and I should keep that job forever until I retire and get the gold watch and the cake at the end

  • I should get married well before age 30 (I did. . . big mistake!)

  • I should have kids before age 30 (couldn’t)

  • I should only use a credit card for emergencies, after all that’s what they’re for

  • I should never quit a good-paying job with benefits to pursue a career in art

  • I should be careful and not take risks

What should’s are in your head? Should’s promote fear. They are self-imposed or oftentimes parental-imposed limits. They’re fake lines in the sand that you’re not supposed to cross. And believe me, they are totally fake! Untrue, phoney, falsehoods. Do you have “should’s” preventing you from being who you authentically are?

If you’re just starting to paint and you’re 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, or even 90 years old, you’re not late for anything.

“There are no wrong turns. Only paths we had not known we were meant to walk”. — Gavriel Kay

Does It Matter? [k-n-o-w]

Does it matter if you start making art later than others?

Nope, not one bit.

You start making art when you’re ready, when you’re life is ready (there’s finally room for it!), or when there’s a need to make art. Typically those are the necessary components:  readiness, time/space, and desire. And those components show up whenever they show up.
Art can be the only way to truly express oneself. Many discover this later in life. It’s raw, real, and unique to you. So don’t make excuses or feel you have to explain that you’ve suddenly decided to be an artist, or you’re just now getting to it because the kids are finally out of the house, or whatever reason is in your head. Just create and realize you’ve always been an artist. It’s been there the whole time.

“To be an artist, you don’t have to compose music or paint or be in the movies or write books. It’s just a way of living. It has to do with paying attention, remembering, filtering what you see and answering back, participating in life”. ~Viggo Mortensen
